The present Moldova used to fall under Romania during interwar period but it was incorporated with Soviet Union during the end of World War II. However Moldova got independence from Soviet Union in 1991. In 1992, Moldova achieved the recognition of independent state at the United Nation. In 1993 a new currency Moldovan leu was introduced replacing the old Soviet currency - Soviet ruble. From 1992 to 2001, Moldova suffered the worst economic crisis. Vladimir Voronin was elected as president in 2001 and he served till 2009. In 2013 Iurie Leanca was elected as the Prime Minister of Moldova who resigned in 2015. In Dec 2015, Ion Sturza was again elected as the Prime Minister of Moldova for the second time. In January 2016, Pavel Filip was elected as the Prime Minister of Moldova and he is the present Prime Minister of Moldova.
